Parental Support
1 Day Course
The training programme covers the really practical aspects of supporting parents who are experiencing anxiety or depression related to pregnancy and birth.
It is created from our practical experience of supporting parents on a 1 to 1 peer support basis, as well as evidence-based principles.
It aims to provide your organisation with a comprehensive base from which to develop your perinatal mental health support service and to increase knowledge and confidence of staff to support parents.
The Topics we cover include...
- Basic counselling skills: these skills are key to conveying empathy, building rapport and trust and ultimately a meaningful relationship which will help enable parents to express and verbalise their thoughts and emotions and open the pathway for support
- The importance of boundaries: these enable us to provide a safe space for the parents we work with and for ourselves and to establish the “helping relationship”
- The initial conversation: we will look at common themes that arise and are disclosed perinatally with reference to case studies and tips and tools for support – including signposting.
- Safeguarding: we will also reference case studies to look at safeguarding from a perinatal mental health perspective, and tips and tools for support and safeguarding actions/pathways
- Self-help tools: practical tools to use with parents
- Looking after your own mental health: the importance of self-care and recognising your limitations
We recommend that this programme is completed together with the Introduction to Perinatal Mental Health course.
